NASHVILLE, Tennessee — A Juvenile Court detention hearing is set in the case of a 14-year-old boy accused of shooting a 10-year-old in the chest inside a room of the Regency Inn on Hampton Street at 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Marterious Boyd is in stable condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The investigation shows that Boyd was playing with a toy cap gun and pointing it at other boys who were in the room playing video games. The 14-year-old had a .22 caliber revolver (which was in poor mechanical condition), pointed it at the 10-year-old and pulled the trigger.

The gun discharged, striking the 10-year-old. A female young adult was in the motel room taking a bath at the time and did not see the shooting.

The 14-year-old, who was located by officers at his home near the motel, was charged with aggravated assault and unlawful gun possession.

From WSMV: Marterious Boyd was staying at the Regency Inn and Suites Hotel on Hampton Street with his aunt, his aunt’s children and grandchildren, according to the aunt.

The aunt said she stepped outside the room around midnight while the children were playing inside. Police said the children were playing with toy guns, which is when a 14-year-old somehow produced a real gun.

No further details were available.
