BLUE SPRINGS, MO — A teenage boy was shot and killed by Blue Springs police on Wednesday morning. Troopers said the teen apparently wanted to commit “suicide by cop.”

According to KMBC, the shooting happened in the 1500 block of Southwest 20th Street about 5 a.m. as police were investigating a reported prowler call.

The unidentified male, 16, made the initial call to police. When police arrived on scene, the boy pulled out a weapon, police said. Two Officers opened fire, fatally wounding the teen. The type of weapon the suspect had was not known.

The officers involved in the shooting have surrendered their handguns and were placed on leave as the investigation begins.

“Anytime when you’re dealing with a situation like this, where somebody’s life has been taken, it is a tragic incident. And, when you’re talking about a 16-year-old, it makes it even more tragic,” Sgt. Bill Lowe said.
