NASHVILLE, TENN — (MNPD) — Three-year-old Treyvon Tyson is expected to be released from Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital during the night after being treated for a gunshot wound to his wrist. His father told detectives that the wound was self-inflicted after Treyvon handled a pistol from his (the father’s) backpack.

Tevin Tyson, 24, a licensed security guard who has a handgun permit, reported that when he and Treyvon got home Tuesday evening, both placed their backpacks on the floor of their apartment in the Glastonbury Woods complex on Glastonbury Road.

Tevin’s backpack contained a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol. Tevin said he told Treyvon to retrieve clothing from his (the child’s) backpack and turned away. Tevin said he then heard a gunshot.

Tevin Tyson loaded Treyvon into his vehicle and was taking him to a hospital when he saw a Metro police officer on Briley Parkway at the I-24 interchange and asked for help. An ambulance was called and Treyvon was transported to Vanderbilt.

Youth Services Detective Wayne Michon is leading the investigation with assistance from detectives at the Hermitage and South Precincts.
