WASHINGTON — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is calling for a state and federal hate crime investigation of the desecration of a Nevada mosque, the latest such incident in a recent spike in attacks on Muslim houses of worship nationwide.
Police say raw bacon was wrapped on door handles of Masjid-e-Tawheed in Las Vegas, Nev., sometime before early morning prayers on Sunday.
“This type of attempted desecration must be investigated as an act of intimidation and hate, and the perpetrators must be brought to justice,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
On Tuesday, the FBI confirmed it is investigating the incident as a “possible hate crime.”
Over the weekend, CAIR called on law enforcement authorities to investigate an apparent firebombing of mosque in Tracy Calif., and arson at a mosque in southwest Houston.
