A Memphis Police Department officer, Preston Hemphill, has been disciplined as the sixth officer involved in Tyre Nichols’ beating and arrest, according to a department spokeswoman.

Hemphill was removed from duty after the Jan. 7 arrest of Nichols, who died three days later at a hospital. The role Hemphill played in the arrest was not disclosed.

Hemphill’s lawyer stated that Hemphill was at a traffic stop prior to the arrest, activated his body camera, but was not at the scene where the beating took place.

The disciplinary action taken against Hemphill was not immediately released as he was not fired and information about officers who are relieved of duty is usually given out after an investigation ends.
