Apple has now filed an appeal to reject the US District Court order to unlock one of the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone.

On Feb. 16, U.S. District Court Magistrate Sheri Pym ordered Apple to help the FBI unlock Farook’s iPhone 5c by creating a special version of its iOS software to bypass the security systems in place on the phone.

At around 11pm on Tuesday, lawyers representing Apple also filed a formal objection to the ruling out of an abundance of caution.

‘This is not about the San Bernardino case. This is about the safety and security of every iPhone that is in use today,’ Sewell said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Apple Inc. are engaged in a dispute over whether the federal court may compel Apple to create and electronically sign new software that would enable the FBI to unlock an iPhone 5c it recovered from one of the shooters in a terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California, in December 2015.

The attack killed 14 people and seriously injured 22. The two attackers later died in a shootout with police, having previously destroyed their personal phones, however a work phone issued to one of the attackers by his employer was recovered intact.
