COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA — Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of Arkeem Breeland, 23, charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm during a violent crime and unlawful carry of a firearm.
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that a Richland County Sheriff’s Deputy was fired upon while responding to a domestic disturbance at the residence. The Sheriff stated that Breeland, who was out of prison only two weeks prior, fired shots at the deputy as he arrived on the scene. The Sheriff added that Breeland has an extensive criminal history, and is no stranger to violence as he has been involved in several shootings in the Apple Valley area of Richland County. The Sheriff stated that Deputy Christopher Bagby showed great restraint in not returning fire as Breeland fled the area.
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that Richland County Sheriff’s Department deputies located and arrested Breeland on Sunday, January 24, 2016 in the wood lines on Camrose Court. The Sheriff stated that on Saturday, January 23, 2016 deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at around 11:30 PM on Camrose Court. When Deputy Bagby arrived at the location, Breeland fired several shots at the deputy striking the patrol vehicle.
Breeland then fled into the woods and was located after an extensive search. The Sheriff stated that Breeland was transported to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. The Sheriff stated that Breeland was treated for hypothermia and a pre-existing health condition.
Sheriff Leon Lott stated that Breeland was out on probation when this incident occurred and has been transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
