WHITLEY COUNTY, Kentucky — On August 10, 2015, Deputy Mike Taylor responded to a Skaggs Branch Road residence after a caller told 911 dispatchers that a woman had shot at two children. The children were reported to be members of her family and in her care.

When Dep. Taylor arrived at the reported residence, he came into contact with the suspect, Lorie L. Cornett, 42. When she answered the door, she appeared to be under the influence and was holding a loaded and cocked .22 caliber pistol.

Cornett said that she had taken prescription medication and had consumed alcoholic beverages.

FOX19 reported: “Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell said while investigating a deputy found three empty cartridges, and the gun had two spent cartridges.

Cornett told police she didn’t remember babysitting the children, and that she was on medication and had been drinking.”

The two children were placed into the custody of another family member. Cornett was arrested and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer and public intoxication.
