Sigel, 40, whose real name is Dwight Grant, was shot outside a New Jersey home on Friday after he had just returned from dropping his kids off at school, authorities say.
Police say he was not the intended target.
“Apparently, there was a struggle of some type, which led to Mr. Grant being shot and that is all we have at this point,” Pleasantville Police Chief Jose Ruiz told the Associated Press.
Sigel was listed in critical condition, but was awake following his surgery later that day. He cannot speak to tell police what happened and is on a ventilator.
One person of interest that has been named by authorities is Kamilah Salahuddin, the rapper’s sister-in-law, according to NBC Philadelphia.
Salahuddin is the sister to Umar Salahuddin, Sigel’s brother-in-law who was found injured along with the rapper. Her vehicle, a gray Honda Odyssey, was seen fleeing the scene of the shooting.
