3 dead after train strikes vehicle on tracks in Monroe County, Georgia, deputies say

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. – Two women and a Good Samaritan were killed when they were struck by a train in Monroe County on Wednesday night.

Around 6:20 p.m., the Ford Flex was struck by a train at a private crossing near the intersection of Goodwyne Road and Collier Road.

Police say that the Flex, occupied by two women, somehow got stuck on the tracks and a Good Samaritan attempted to help the two passengers out of the vehicle. At that time, the vehicle was struck by a Norfolk Southern train.

All three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

The passengers of the Flex are identified as Shirley Treadwell, 93-years-old and Debra Ruth Hall, 66.

The man who was attempting to help the passengers is identified as Chris Burkett, 47. All three are from Monroe County.

“This is a tragic loss for all three families and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences go out to the families. The accident is under investigation.”
