Nuevo Laredo, MEXICO — Police there say they have arrested four armed men, presumably Cartel members, accused of firing at Mayor Leticia Salazar’s convoy Sunday night.

The incident happened in Matamoros, a northern city bordering Texas in the grips of drug cartel violence.

Matamoros, officially known as Heroica Matamoros and formerly named San Juan de los Esteros Hermosos, is a city in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

The AFP reports, the Mayor escaped unharmed from the shooting, which took place as she was arriving home in a sport utility vehicle protected by two other vehicles and eight bodyguards, said an official from the Tamaulipas state prosecutor’s office.

Herminio Garza, interior secretary of the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, said the gunmen apparently attacked the convoy “by mistake, thinking it was a (rival) group.”
