BOSTON — Officer Michael Doherty has been charged with two counts of assault and battery, one count each of assault and battery for purposes of intimidation, violation of constitutional rights, and use of a motor vehicle without authority.
The Boston Police Department Has Suspended The Officer:
Today, Thursday April 2, 2015, Police Commissioner William Evans suspended Officer Michael Doherty without pay, after being indicted on charges stemming from an incident that occurred on January 4, 2015 .Doherty had been on Administrative Leave since his arrest by the Boston Police in January.
At about 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2015, officers from District C-6 (South Boston) responded to a call for a ride share driver stating that he had been assaulted by a passenger in the area of E. 1st Street and Farragut Road in South Boston. On arrival, officers spoke to the victim, an Uber driver, who stated that he was in the process of dropping a passenger off in the area of E. 2nd Street in South Boston when the passenger began yelling at him and accusing him of trying to drop him off at the wrong location. Victim further states that the suspect physically assaulted him when he stopped his vehicle in the area of E. 2nd and M Streets. In an effort to escape the suspect, the victim states that he exited his vehicle. Once outside the vehicle, the victim states that he watched as the suspect got into the front seat of his car and drove off. The victim, who was aided by a passing motorist, followed the victim to E. 1st Street and Farragut Road where the suspect stopped and exited the victim’s car. The suspect fled the area before police arrived. The suspect was later identified, located and placed under arrest by Boston Police.
The Boston Police Anti-Corruption Division along with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office conducted a complete and thorough investigation culminating in additional charges being sought against Doherty. “These allegations are very troubling and certainly don’t reflect the attitudes of the of the hard working, compassionate men and women of the Boston Police Department,” said Commissioner Evans. “This should send a strong message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated or ignored. I hold my officers to the highest of standards, and will take swift serious action if any should choose to conduct themselves inappropriately.” “I want to thank the Boston Police Anti-Corruption Division and the Suffolk County DA’s Office for their work in this very troubling case,” said Evans. Doherty was indicted on the following charges: Assault and Battery for purpose of intimidation, Violation of Constitutional Rights, Assault and Battery (2 counts) and Using a Motor Vehicle without Authority. He is expected to appear in Suffolk Superior Court at a date to be determined.
