NEW BOSTON, Texas — 47-year-old Corrections Officer Timothy Davison has died after being attacked by an inmate Wednesday.

The attack happened about 9 a.m.

The Officer was escorting the inmate from a dayroom when he was attacked by the inmate with an iron rod, KTBS reported.

The murder weapon was used to open the cell-door slots that are used to deliver meals to inmates.

Officer Davison was airlifted to a hospital in Texarkana where he later died from his injuries.

It’s unclear what provoked the fatal attack.

The inmate responsible for the murder was identified as 37-year-old Billy Joel Tracy.

Tracy has a long criminal history and is serving a life term for robbery and aggravated assault from Rockwall County, the report said. The inmate is also serving a 45-year sentence for a separate conviction for assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with serious bodily injury on a public servant, and possession of a deadly weapon in a penal institution.

“Our hearts are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life,” Brad Livingston, executive director of the prison system, said. “This dedicated correctional officer came to work each day determined to make Texas a safe place to live.”

It’s the first killing of a corrections officer in Texas since 2007.
