Baltimore County Police have released further information on the police involved shooting this morning in Owings Mills.
A preliminary investigation into the incident has indicated that just after 1 a.m., Baltimore County Police responded to a home in the 3000 block of Hunting Ridge Drive 21117 for an unknown trouble call. The caller into 911 stated that her granddaughter resided at the location and had called her because her mother and father were fighting. When officers arrived on the scene, they could hear a disturbance inside the home. After unsuccessfully trying to get someone to answer the door, three officers forced their way inside because they feared that someone’s life may be in danger.
When the officers entered the home they encountered an adult male making movements that placed the officers in fear that the male had a weapon and would engage them with that weapon. All three officers then fired their service weapons. The exact number of times officers discharged their weapons is not yet known but investigators found 19 shell casings in the area of the incident.
The male was taken to Sinai Trauma Center where he was later declared deceased. He has been identified as 41-year-old Spencer Lee McCain.
The three officers involved in this incident have been placed on administrative status while this incident is reviewed. Due to a contract agreement with the Fraternal Order of Police, the officers’ names cannot be released for 48 hours.
The preliminary investigation has also indicated that there was an adult female and two children in the home when the incident occurred. The adult female did have visible injuries but declined transportation to a medical facility. There is a current protective order against McCain which prohibited him from having contact with the female or the children and from going to the location on Hunting Ridge Drive. In addition, police have been called to the Hunting Ridge Drive home approximately 17 times since January 2012.
A weapon was not found during a preliminary search of the location.
This incident remains under investigation by the Baltimore County Police Department Homicide Unit. After the investigation is complete, it will be sent to the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

Baltimore County Police are investigating a police involved shooting early this morning in Owings Mills.
At 1:05 a.m., Baltimore County Police responded to a home in the 3000 block of Hunting Ridge Drive 21117 for an unknown trouble call. As officers were en route to the scene, further information was received that the trouble may be domestic in nature.
When officers arrived at the scene, they could hear a disturbance inside the home. When no one would answer the door, officers had to force their way into the location.
An adult male inside the home then confronted officers. The male produced what officers believed to be a gun and multiple officers, fearing for their safety and the safety of others, opened fire. The male was transported to an area hospital for treatment. His current condition is unknown.
Police also found an adult female and two children in the home.
This incident is under investigation by the Baltimore County Police Homicide Unit. It is standard procedure for the Homicide Unit to investigate police involved shootings. When the investigation is complete, the report will be turned over to the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
