NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The mother of a young boy who shot his first-grade teacher at Richneck Elementary in January has been indicted by a grand jury in Newport News.

Deja Taylor is facing charges of felony child neglect and misdemeanor for leaving a loaded firearm that endangered a child. Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn also revealed that he has requested a special grand jury to investigate potential security issues at Richneck that might have contributed to the incident.

Abby Zwerner, the teacher who was shot, survived the incident and has filed a lawsuit against the school district, seeking $40 million in damages. According to the lawsuit, the school board and three former administrators at Richneck acted with gross negligence and reckless breach of duty.

No charges will be pressed against the 6-year-old child.
