NEW YORK — An off-duty NYPD police officer fatally shot himself in a car in Queens Wednesday.
The scene is near Burns Street and 69th Avenue.
The officer was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The officer was taken to Elmhurst Hospital by an NYPD car and was listed in critical condition — where he was later pronounced deceased.

Deputy Chief Steven Silks handed in his retirement papers to the NYPD Tuesday night. He was scheduled to retire at the end of July after 38 years on the job.

Silks was not married and had no children.
He reportedly had pleaded with uppper brass for a promotion to two-star chief for the past three years.
