AURORA, Colo. – An active search is underway in Aurora, where police say an off-duty deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was shot. Aurora Police said it happened at 17396 East Adriatic Drive, near Rangeview High School and Mrachek Middle School. Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office called the deputy’s condition is critical. He has multiple gunshot wounds in his chest and abdomen.
Police say a juvenile suspect was the second person shot. He has a gunshot wound in his leg and is in police custody. A witness says he heard six gunshots total. A second suspect is at large. Detectives don’t know a name but say he’s a black male wearing a brown jacket.
Aurora Police are searching around an apartment complex in the area.

This started as a random robbery, investigators say. Aurora Police sent a reverse 911 call to neighbors to explain the situation.
Rangeview High School had been put on lockdown as a precaution. Sports events were held at the school on Tuesday. SWAT, K-9 teams and officers from Aurora and Denver are involved in this investigation. Neighbors are asked to call in any suspicious activity.
UPDATE:
Police are actively searching backyards and areas where suspicious behavior is being reported.
