Police: Staff Detains Newtown Teacher Who Brought Gun To School

NEWTOWN, CT — At approximately 09:00 a.m. the Newtown Police Department was contacted by school personnel from the Newtown Middle School located at 11 Middle Street, Newtown, Connecticut, advising them that school security personnel were detaining a teacher from the school who was observed inside the school carrying a firearm.

Upon arrival police personnel interviewed witnesses and made a determination that the teacher, identified as Jason M. Adams, of 90 Currituck Rd. Newtown, Connecticut, 10/11/1969, had entered the school carrying a concealed firearm. Adams possesess a valid State of Connecticut Pistol Permit.

The police department, working closely with the administration of the Newtown Public School system, commenced an immediate investigation and a determination was made that Mr. Adams was in violation of State Statute 53a­217(b) and school policy that strictly forbids the possession of a firearm on school property.

After a brief detention Mr. Adam’s was charged with Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds, 53a­217(b) and transported to the Newtown Police Department for processing; he was released on his own recognizance, with a court appearance date at GA#3 Danbury of 4/20/2016.

In a release prepared by the Newtown School System the following information was relayed: “ This matter is very serious and troubling, both the Newtown Public School system and the Newtown Police Department took immediate steps to address the matter. The teacher was immediately detained by security personnel. The teacher has additionally been placed on administrative leave pending an administrative investigation. Both agencies have been working closely together to investigate the incident and are taking precautions to ensure the continued safety of our students, staff and community members.”
