The United States military has begun moving a ‘THAAD’ missile defense system into a previously designated area in South Korea.

Reuters reported: The United States and South Korea have agreed to deploy THAAD in response to threat of missile launches by North Korea but China has opposed the move saying it helps little to deter the North while destabilizing regional security balance.

Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), formerly Theater High Altitude Area Defense, is a United States Army anti-ballistic missile system which is designed to shoot down short, medium, and intermediate range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase using a hit-to-kill approach.

THAAD was developed to counter Iraq’s Scud missile attacks during the Gulf War in 1991
