WASHINGTON, DC – The United States Capitol Police issued itself stop and frisk authority at a recent meeting of its Board.

The Capitol Police Board approved language on July 15 which states: “At the direction of the Chief of Police, the United States Capitol Police may search packages, bags, and other containers in the immediate possession of individuals who enter and are within the United States Capitol Grounds for the purpose of protecting prohibited items.”

Under current rules, Capitol Police must have Probable Cause to search a backpack, briefcase, or other item on the grounds except when entering building structures. Michigan Republican Candice S. Miller, expressed her support for the change saying, “the safety and security of the U.S. Capitol grounds is paramount.”
