A cat in Michigan was found with an arrow going through its chest.

The cream and white coloured cat, who has been named Kitty, was brought into the Capital Area Humane Society on Monday after it was found under a highway.

Despite what the cat had gone through workers say he was in good spirits and his breathing was normal – and later that day he successfully made it through a miracle surgery to have the projectile removed from his body.

Michigan Live reported that the arrow was successfully removed from the cat on Monday, but there is still the question of recovery – and a chance the cat may not survive.

Julia Willson, the CEO of Capital Area Humane Society, said they were ‘really happy’ with the results of the surgery, but still need to monitor the cat for 24 hours.

‘It’s pretty touch-and-go right now,’ Willson told the Detroit Free Press.

‘Even under the best-case scenario, we think he’s going to lose a front limb because the radial nerve is severed.’

The cat’s owner is reportedly an elderly woman who cannot afford veterinary care and had not seen the pet since this weekend.

The Sheriff’s Office meanwhile is busy searching for who may have done this to the cat, saying the arrow appears to be similar to one used in target practice.

Even if the cat had been shot by accident, no one ever reported the incident or tried to get the animal help.

Those with any information are asked to call the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office at 517-543-3512.
