A 26-year-old man that was taken hostage by the two terrorist that carried out the Charlie Hebdo massacre was able to escape during the assault performed by police, a French security official told AFP.

The hostage, who has not yet been identified, emerged “safe and sound” from the printing company located northeast of Paris in the town of Dammartin-en-Goele.

The hostage was able to make a side exit from the building. He had locked himself in a room just as brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi headed outside with automatic weapons in hand and firing.

The two brothers were neutralized outside after as they tried to shoot their way past French police.

The AFP Reports:

“Earlier, a worker at the printing firm recounted how he had met the hostage and the two brothers coming in, and how they had presented themselves as police.

The worker had shaken hands with the hostage and one of the gunmen before realizing that they were the criminals being hunted by France’s police. He was allowed to leave.”

One police commando was “slightly hurt,” according to the official.
