A soldier has caused a terror scare at a US Army base during Halloween after he dressed up as a suicide bomber.

The unidentified serviceman tried to walk through one of Fort Bragg’s guarded checkpoints wearing a costume that looked like an explosive vest, military officials said.

Part of the North Carolina base, which is home to airborne and special operations forces, was put on lockdown last night as explosives experts cleared the site in case the threat was real.

In a statement on the Fort Bragg Facebook page, an official said: ‘Last evening a soldier attempted to gain access to Fort Bragg through one of our access control points. The soldier was dressed as a suicide bomber with simulated explosive vest.

‘The incident resulted in an emergency response, EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) clearing the entire scene and an extended closure of a gate

‘Although the incident remains under investigation, initial reports indicate it was a Halloween costume.’

The emergency response saw the checkpoint closed and an investigation was still underway this evening. It is not clear whether the soldier in question has or will be punished.
