Off-Duty Firefighter Charged in Deadly El Paso Bar Fight

EL PASO, TEXAS — An off-duty El Paso firefighter has been charged in the death of a 49- year old man. Detectives identified the three assailants involved and charged two with the man’s death. 37-year old Raul Ruiz pushed the victim outside causing the victim to strike his head on the ground asphalt. 42- year old Adrian Chavez then continued assaulting the victim as he lay on the parking lot. The victim sustained life-threatening injuries to which he succumbed on January 28, six days after the assault.

On Friday, January 22nd 2016, the victim was with his girlfriend at the “El Patron Sports Bar” located at 5622 E. Paisano. After being at the bar for a short while, three men approached the couple. One of the men began to call out the victim. During this time, the victim got up and was pushed by one of the men. The three men pushed and pulled the victim out of the bar. Once outside of the bar, the victim fell to the ground and lost consciousness

The third man was involved in the initial verbal altercation but did not physically assault the victim. Ruiz is an El Paso firefighter assigned to station #18. Both he and Chavez turned themselves in at police headquarters on Friday and were booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under a $75,000 bond charged with Manslaughter.
