Authorities in Washington D.C. were in search of an individual suspected of setting another man on fire during daylight hours on Monday — not far from the U.S. Capitol building.
The incident transpired at the intersection of North Capitol Street and P Street Northwest, situated approximately a mile north of the National Mall. According to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, the victim was walking when an unidentified man approached him and soaked him in a liquid accelerant.
Subsequently, the suspect ignited the liquid, causing the victim to be engulfed in flames, police said. The injured individual was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of severe injuries.
To aid in the identification and apprehension of the suspect, detectives released a surveillance image on Monday, featuring the individual who appears to be carrying a glass jar.
In an effort to encourage the public to come forward with information, the Metropolitan Police Department has announced a reward of up to $10,000 for anyone providing details leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. Individuals possessing pertinent information are urged to contact the police department at 202-727-9099 or submit a tip via text to the police tip line at 50411.
