DASHCAM: Ohio State Troopers Shoot Chicago Murder Suspect After High-Speed Pursuit

Wapakoneta, Ohio (OSP) — On September 3, 2023, Chicago Police Department (CPD) was actively “pinging” (precise cellular location data) the cell phone for 45-year-old Danny Berry, a suspect wanted in a shooting incident and possible homicide in their city. CPD was conveying that information to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP) intelligence/dispatch center at 12:41 p.m.. At 1:07 p.m., the location of the Bowling Green area on Interstate 75 (I-75) was relayed to the Troopers. The Troopers were also notified that they needed their own probable cause to stop the subject vehicle.

Unit 1148 (Lt. Slates) located the subject vehicle near mile marker (MM) 161 at 1:36 p.m.. Lt. Slates indicated he had probable cause to stop the vehicle and a pursuit ensued near the MM-159. The stop sticks were deployed near MM-147 at 1:46 p.m. with the vehicle striking the stop sticks. At 2:14 p.m., Lt. Slates and Unit 1350 (Staff Lieutenant Crow) were dropping back from the pursuit. At 2:15 p.m., contact was approved for the pit maneuver on the vehicle and the pit maneuver was executed on the passenger side, which was south MM-110. At 1417 p.m., Unit 1633 had northbound traffic of I-75 stopped at MM-109.

From 2:22 p.m., the vehicle became fully engulfed when Berry got out of the vehicle with a gun in his hand. The gun was moved from his left hand to right hand, while the Berry walked southbound on I-75. An order was given not to let Berry get near the motorists. At 2:29 p.m., the K-9 was attempted to be deployed on Berry, when Berry had the gun to his head. At 2:30 p.m., the order was given if the opportunity was given to take it, when the shot was fired at 2:31 p.m.. Fire and EMS were dispatched to the area, as they had been stationed at the 110 exit. Fire and EMS arrived. Berry was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. No officers were injured as a result of the incident.
