A police officer that was responding to the scene of a crash site in South Carolina discovered that his wife was the victim.

Teresa Browder, aged 45, was killed from blunt force trauma to the head when she was involved in a car crash Wednesday in Sumter County, according to WMBF News.

She was driving an SUV and wearing a seatbelt at the time.

Her husband, Wayne ‘Bubba’ Browder, was the deputy who responded to the head-on collision, confirmed Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He had no idea his wife was involved.

The couple have three children.

‘Today was a tragic day for one of our officers, as well as our entire agency, as one of our family members deals with the loss of a loved one,’ sheriff’s office spokesman Braden Bunch said.

‘We ask you keep the Browder family in your thoughts and prayers as they cope with this horrible tragedy.’

Lance Cpl. David Jones with the S.C. Highway Patrol said a 2008 Saturn SUV driven by a 26-year-old Sumter man crossed the center line of Lewis Road while traveling north toward Sumter. He struck Browder, who was headed south.

He struck another vehicle, whose occupant was taken to hospital.

She had worked as a nurse for 25 years, most recently at the Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
