NEW YORK CITY — The NYPD is investigating after an explosive device went off inside of a car in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx on Wednesday night. The scene is at Mahan and Roberts Ave.

The Department received several calls of a reported explosion around 8 p.m. local time.

NBC-NY reported, “Investigators so far believe the device was planted and the man, who has as many as 14 prior arrests, was targeted…”

The pipe bomb fixed with a detonator exploded in the car while it was driving. Airbags deployed in the blast and the man suffered injuries. A female passenger is believed to be unharmed.

A second explosive device, also equipped with a detonator, was found by police. The FBI was on scene but the event is not terror-related, officials said.

The vehicle in question had Ohio license plates.

Police have not elaborated on arrests. The investigation is ongoing.
