AUSTRIA — Multiple victims were reported following a shooting attack and hostage situation in central Vienna Monday night. At least one suspected shooter was taken into custody.
Local media says a gunman opened fire near or at a synagogue, sparking a massive police response and exchanges of gunfire. Shortly after, hostages were reportedly taken at a hotel and Japanese restaurant.
Casualties were confirmed but an exact number was not immediately known—Some Austrian news outlets say up to seven people were killed. One of the fatalities was a police officer.

Police ordered the public to avoid the area and stay indoors. Vienna police said the motive for the attack remains under investigation. Federal police say it is being investigated as a terror attack.
