On Thursday, the Utah Senate halted debate on several bills affecting transgender youth due to a medical issue experienced by Senator Daniel Thatcher (R-West Valley City).
The incident occurred shortly after a vote to move Senate Bill 16, which aims to prohibit gender-affirming surgeries for individuals under 18 years of age, to the full Senate.
Senator Thatcher, who is recovering from a stroke, was attended to on the chamber floor by several individuals.
After a brief pause, Thatcher remained on the floor and told fellow members, “I’m fine.”
NOW: The @utahsenate is taking a break from debate while attending to an apparent medical issue with @SenThatcher, who is recovering from a stroke. It’s unclear what’s happening, but he’s got a crowd of people around him. #utpol #utleg @KUTV2News pic.twitter.com/rP2ZRVGadY
