SEATTLE — Officers crawled through a shattered window at a Mount Baker home Monday to rescue a dog, who had injured herself while scaring off a suspected burglar.
Police believe the burglar turned tail and ran from a home in the 4100 block of 43rd Avenue South around 2 PM after coming face to face with 35 pounds of furry fury named Egypt.
Officers arrived at the home after receiving a 911 call from a neighbor–who had seen the suspect running from the home–and found a shattered window on the north side of the house. Police heard a dog barking inside the home and spotted blood spattered on a couch and pooled on the floor of a bathroom.
Officer Marcus Martin crawled through the broken window and let two other officers into the house.
Police found the injured Egypt lying on the bathroom floor with large gashes on her front paws, likely sustained from the broken glass. Officers William Miller and Ian Walsh comforted the dog while Officer Gordon Bentler grabbed medical supplies and bandaged Egypt’s wounds. They were able to contact Egypt’s owner, who returned to the home and took her to a vet for treatment.
Egypt’s owner says Egypt–a 7-year-old whippet/lab mix, who she describes as a “fast mountain adventure dog”–is doing well and will undergo surgery today for her injuries.
“She has always taken her job as an alert dog very seriously,” Egypt’s owner says, “making sure everyone is aware when the postal worker has arrived.” -Seattle.gov
