Driver Suspected Of Intentionally Running Over People In Modesto, Calif.; 1 Dead

Modesto, Calif. – A driver is suspected of intentionally running over two people – killing one of them – in a Modesto alley early Wednesday morning.

Police responded to reports that 2 people who had been struck by a vehicle while in the alley behind the A&M Market on Maze Boulevard. When officers arrived, they located an injured man and an unresponsive injured woman in the alley next to their tent.

Officer’s provided CPR to the woman until EMS arrived. Both victims were transported to a local hospital. The 61-year-old victim did not survive her injuries. The 30-year-old male victim suffered moderate injuries, but is expected to survive.

Police say the suspect “intentionally ran over the victims while they were in their tent after an altercation between the male victim and the responsible.”

The drove away after the incident.

After obtaining a vehicle description, a Cadet with MPD located the suspect and his vehicle nearby and Officers were able to take him into custody without incident.

Detectives arrested 39-year-old Cruz Diaz of Merced on homicide charges. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail.

The motive and details of the altercation are still under investigation.
