A Four-year-old girl has now undergone surgery for horrific injuries after she was snatched from the streets of a New Delhi slum and then was raped by two men at knife point.
The girl was later after the attack by her parents, unconscious, suffering from severe injuries and dumped near some train tracks.
Vijay Singh, a senior police officer investigating the case, said police were questioning two men, though no arrests had been made.
Despite the protests which stemmed from the gang rape and murder of a student in 2012 and creation of tougher anti-rape laws, incidents of the crime in the capital have not dwindled.
He said: ‘We are questioning the men in our custody and trying to help the victim’s father obtain best medical care for the child.’
The child’s grandmother told the BBC: ‘What happened to us was reprehensible.
‘We are worried about our children. We do not let them out for fear they might be taken away by unknown men.’
This is the latest case of sexual violence to create an uproar in the country.
More than 1,000 cases of rape have been recorded by the Delhi police this year.
