INDIANAPOLIS – Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Homicide Unit are investigating the death of 50-year old Christopher Carlson in the alley east of the 4800 blk. of Primrose Av.

Just after 6:30 p.m. officers were dispatched the 4800 blk. of Primrose Av. on the report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they were directed to the alley east of Primrose Av. where they found an unidentified adult male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Two small children, who investigators believe to be the victim’s children, are unharmed and are being cared for by IMPD’s Victim Assistance Unit.

No arrests have been made. Carlson had been convicted of child abuse for forcing his three grandsons on a 19-mile Grand Canyon hike. He was sentenced to 27 months in prison.

According to prosecutors, Carlson refused to give food and water to his three grandsons, Kevin, 12, Micah, 9, and Kameron, 8, during two separate hikes in August 2011.

In February, a jury found Carlson guilty on three of the six child abuse charges he faced, ABC news reported.

In granting a light sentence, U.S. District Judge Frederick Martone noted that Carlson appeared to love his grandkids and has struggled with attention-deficit disorder and hyperactivity.
