Colo. Man Shot While Cleaning Gun and Drinking

COLORADO SPRINGS — On Monday, at 9:17PM, officers of the Colorado Springs Police Dept. responded to 5422 N. Nevada Ave regarding a shooting. Someone called police to report his brother being shot in the arm. The person indicated they had been cleaning guns.

Once officers arrived four people were found in the apartment. The victim was immediately taken to the hospital with non-life threatening wounds to his arm.

The investigation revealed the group had been consuming alcohol and one member of the group brought out a gun. The victim began to clean it when he handed it to the suspect who was later identified as Matthew Spurling. Spurling mishandled the gun and shot the victim in the arm.

Spurling was later arrested and taken to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center and booked on charges of Assault. There were no other injuries reported.
