YUMA, Ariz. – Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents assisted a pregnant Guatemalan national who later delivered her baby.

Sunday night in the Yuma Central Processing Center, a Guatemalan national detainee approached agents and stated that she was pregnant and feeling ill. Agents immediately notified Yuma Regional Medical Center and transported the woman there for further medical care.

Monday morning, the Guatemalan woman gave birth to a healthy male child. Both will be under medical observation for the next 36 hours. By law, the child is a U.S. citizen due to the fact that he was born on U.S. soil.

The Guatemalan woman is just one of more than 1,900 Guatemalan nationals apprehended by the Yuma Sector Border Patrol since October 1 of this year—more than a 175 percent increase from the same time last year.
