A hand grenade was thrown at a migrant shelter in the early hours of Friday, it then failed to detonate.

A weapon specialist was requested to the scene to detonate the grenade at the asylum center in Villingen-Schwenningen.

Police reported that pin of the grenade had been pulled and that the grenade was live.

A local security guard noticed the grenade in front of the building at 1:30am, he then alerted the emergency services.

Police then carried out an evacuation of the building and adjacent properties before the grenade was exploded under a pile of sandbags.

Police carried out an investigation around the scene of the crime for any further evidence.

The surrounding area is home to around 250 people.

‘I think we can say for sure the perpetrators did not belong to the local ‘Refugees Welcome’ group,’ said local police spokesman Thomas Kalmbach.
