911 Calls Reveal Moments Before Police Shootout

NORTH CAROLINA — On August 8, 2015 at approximately 9:18pm, the Gaston County Police Department’s 911 Communications Center received a call from a residence on Greenwood Dr. Gastonia, NC. The caller reported a male subject was in the home with a gun. The caller then reported his dad had been shot and the suspect was still in the house. Numerous other calls began coming into the 911 Communication Center concerning an active shooter on Greenwood Dr.

Gaston County Police officers responded to the scene and were confronted outside a residence by a suspect holding a shotgun and wearing a pistol. Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and officers. During the exchange two officers were wounded and the suspect was fatally wounded.

Officers also located a victim of a fatal shooting at a second location in the neighborhood.  The name of that victim is being withheld pending notification of the family. A third shooting victim was located at another home on Greenwood Dr. She was transported to Caromont Regional Medical Center with non-life threating injuries.

Both Gaston County Police officers were transported to Caromont Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The Gaston County Police Department is conducting the investigation into the shooting of the two victims.  The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been requested to investigate officer involved shooting.  In addition, a parallel investigation will be conducted by the Gaston County Police Professional Standards Unit to insure all policies and procedures were followed.   The Gaston County Police officers involved in the shooting have been placed on Administrative Leave with pay pending the completion of the investigation.
