This image, taken on a roadside in Dallas at the weekend, shows a Great Pyrenees refusing to leave the side of his friend who had died.

The other dog appears to have been struck down by a car.

‘He was just kind of sitting guard, like a statue, just sitting there watching over his friend’s body,’ animal advocate Julie Fennell told NBC.

Passers-by spotted the dog and called to tell the local animal shelter.

A volunteer, Jessy Fairferlick, rushed to the scene to help the dog, until Fennell arrived to assist.

‘He’s obviously being loyal to a friend who passed away and he’s mourning,’ Fennell added.

‘It really looks like (the other dog) was hit in the road, you can see the blood in the road, and it looks like he dragged her up onto the grass out of the road.’

It is still unclear if the dog is a stray or if it was lost.

It was unequivocal however that it cared for its friend.

‘He made a friend,’ Fennell said.

‘Whether it was his companion in his yard at home or whether they met up as strays, but something made him stay by her side.’

The dog was found across the street from Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.

The dog is current in the care of Dallas Animal Services.

He was not wearing a collar and was also not microchipped.

If an owner does not come forward in 72 hours, he will be transferred to SPIN rescue, a group focused on the rescue of Great Pyrenees dogs.
