Kansas City Police detective Brad Lancaster has died after being shot near the Kansas Speedway Monday.

The scene is near 777 Hollywood Casino Blvd.

The Officer was rushed to a hospital by ambulance when emergency responders decided not to wait on a helicopter. He was struck multiple times and was in surgery.

Lancaster later died.

From WDAF: “[…] The suspect took an unmarked police vehicle and then ditched it. He then carjacked another vehicle near 141st Terrace and Hollingsworth Road in Basehor, Kan., about nine miles west of the speedway, that reportedly had two children inside. The children are safe, police say.”

The gunman is identified as Curtis Ayers. Ayers is believed to have been involved in a second officer-involved shooting on HWY 71. He was shot and taken into custody.

A female bystander also suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound during the firefight.

The KCK Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #4 wrote on Facebook: “Our hearts are heavy with the senseless killing of Detective Brad Lancaster while in the line of duty today. We ask that you give your thoughts to the Lancaster family and the members of the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department during this difficult time.”
