Long Island Beach Evacuated After Shark Sighting

LONG ISLAND — Officials ordered swimmers out of the water at a Long Island beach Thursday after two sharks were spotted lurking in the water.

Press Release/ Nassau County Police: –-Unusual Incident involving sharks observed in Massapequa on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 11:49 am.

According to police, Seventh Precinct Police Officers along with the assistance of the Nassau County Aviation Unit responded to a call for sharks spotted in the waters off Tobay Beach. Pilots were able to visually confirm that two six foot long sharks were seen fifteen feet from the shoreline swimming in a easterly direction towards Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County. All Tobay Beach swimmers were ordered out of the waters until later deemed safe. There were no injuries reported.–

No one was injured or made contact with a shark.

From NBC 4 NY: —A lifeguard initially evacuated Tobay Beach after spotting a five-foot shark in water, moving from the east end to the west end of the beach, around noon, authorities said. Police went up in a helicopter to check out the potential sighting and confirmed the lifeguard’s sighting; they also saw another shark.–

According to the report, some two thousand people were on the beach when the sighting was reported.
