Police ‘Explorer’ Captain Suddenly Dies

INDIANAPOLIS — Explorer Captain Heidi Lynnea Gatliff died suddenly on Monday, the department announced…

“It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts we announce the loss of IMPD Explorer Post Commander, Explorer Captain Heidi Lynnea Gatliff.

Heidi passed unexpectedly on November 2, 2015. She is the daughter of Mike Gatliff (IMPD Pawn Section/IFD Chaplain) and Janice Gatliff.

Heidi was appointed an IMPD Explorer on December 17, 2013.

A 2015 graduate of Heritage Christian School and Freshman in the Ivy Tech Public Safety Program, Heidi served as the post public information officer before her promotion to captain and post commander on October 27, 2015.

In her short time working with the department, she became well liked by officers for her devotion to serve others and her pursuit for a life in public safety.”

Officials didn’t release further details about her death.

The IMPD Explorer Program is sponsored by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in collaboration with the Boy Scouts of America.

The program gives youth an opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement. It has been in existence since May 1970.
