NASHVILLE — A gun carrying 17-year-old who tried to rob Knock Out Wings at 1300 Jefferson Street at 9:40 p.m. Thursday died from gunshot wounds after an employee opened fire on him in the midst of the hold up.

Five employees, 3 men and 2 women, were inside the restaurant when the teen, Jaylin Cummins, who was dressed in all black clothing and had his face covered, entered. He demanded money from the cash register at gunpoint. As one of the female employees dealt with Cummins, one of her co-workers, Herbert Scruggs, 58, saw an opportunity to retrieve a pistol being carried by another male employee (who had his hands up). Scruggs then opened fire on the robber. Cummins, wounded and bleeding, fled the restaurant without any money. He got into a waiting white car.

Less than 30 minutes later, Hermitage Precinct officers responded to Terrace Park Apartments on Elm Hill Pike on a call of a shooting victim. Cummins was located on the ground outside one of the units. His girlfriend said she opened the apartment door and found Cummins as a white vehicle drove away.

The investigation is continuing as North Precinct detectives work to identify the other person or persons who were inside the white car.

No charges are anticipated against Scruggs. The completed investigation will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office.

Woman Claims Self-Defense in Fatal Shooting at Marathon Market on John A. Merritt Boulevard

The woman who admits to fatally shooting Mykal Prime, 19, outside the Marathon market at 2810 John A. Merritt Boulevard at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday says she did so in self-defense after Prime pulled a gun and pistol-whipped her during an attempted marijuana-related robbery.

No charges are being placed at present against Khadijah Griffis, 25. The results of the completed investigation will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office.

From what North Precinct detectives have learned at present, Prime got into the front seat of Griffis’ car, which had been parked at the gas pumps for several minutes, but didn’t shut the door. A struggle ensued, and Prime was shot as he exited the car. He collapsed in the parking lot. First responding officers recovered a Luger-style pistol underneath him.

Detectives located the man who dropped Prime off at the market. He acknowledged that Prime went there to buy marijuana from an unknown person.

At 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, police were notified that a woman (Griffis) had walked into Centennial Medical Center claiming to have been pistol-whipped during a robbery. Detectives went to the hospital and interviewed Griffis. She said that Prime sat in the front seat of her car, pulled a pistol and tried to rob her. She said a struggle ensued, during which she was able to shove Prime out of the car before pulling her own pistol and shooting Prime one time.

Griffis, who acknowledged that she was the marijuana seller, said she was scared and drove to her apartment before seeking medical attention for head injuries at Centennial.

A third teen was shot multiple times Tuesday night after police say he attempted to rob a man at gunpoint at a Bell Road ATM.
