Woman charged in death of puppy found inside weighted cage in NJ pond

NEW JERSEY — Based upon an investigation by the West Milford Police Department, Tonya Fea a 47 year old Jefferson Township woman, was arrested Tuesday in relation to an animal cruelty incident that took place April 30, 2019. Tonya Fea is charged with two counts of Animal Cruelty, both Third Degree offenses and Defiant Trespass, Petty Disorderly Persons Offense.

On April 30, 2019, a female golden retriever puppy was found in a submerged cage in Greenwood Pond on Bonter Road. The puppy was subsequently taken to the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory where a necropsy was performed.

“The official autospy report confirmed that drowning was the cause of death,” The Last Resort Rescue said. “Jenny was ALIVE and was intentionally drowned by this monster.”

Based on the investigation Tonya Fea was subsequently charged.

The sentencing exposure on each count of Third Degree Animal Cruelty is a maximum of 5 years in New Jersey State Prison and on Petty Disorderly Persons Offense of Defiant Trespass the maximum exposure is 30 days in the County Jail.
