Kanye West, who has kept a very low profile since he canceled his tour following onstage rants and hospitalization for stress and exhaustion, showed up in the most public of places Tuesday: Trump Tower.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks told reporters that West came to Trump Tower to “meet with the president-elect.”

Then, Donald Trump came down the elevator, took pictures with the rapper and told reporters, “He’s a good friend. … We’ve been friends for a long time.” Trump added that the two discussed “life.”

Um. Why?

Well, maybe it has to do with the praise West offered Trump following the election, declaring onstage in San Jose that he would have voted for the Republican — had West voted at all. (His wife, Kim Kardashian, was a vocal Hillary Clinton supporter.)

West also announced at the concert that he still intends to run for president in 2020 and that he “loved” Trump’s approach. His recent rants fueled speculation about West’s mental state and led to him ending his Saint Pablo tour early.

In the past, Trump has also had some kind words for West.

“I’ll never say bad about him,” Trump said during a 2015 rally. “You want to know why? Because he loves Trump. He goes around saying Trump is my all-time hero. He says it to everybody.”

“So to Kanye West, I love him. Now maybe in a a few years I might have to run against him, I don’t know, so I’ll take that back,” Trump added. “But you know what, he’s been so nice to me. You people have sort of seen, I’ve been a counter-puncher. I only hit people when they hit me. Only. Kanye West has been so great. I would never say bad about him because he says such nice things about me.”

TMZ said the rapper was in New York to interview East Coast psychiatrists to add to his West Coast medical team.
