CALIFORNIA — Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a Deputy-Involved Shooting that occurred on Somerset Boulevard and Gundry Avenue, Paramount, on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at approximately 9:25 p.m.
Detectives have learned that deputies from Lakewood Station observed a car speeding southbound on Orange Avenue from Somerset Boulevard in Paramount. The deputies followed the car as it turned onto Myrrh Street and then onto Gundry Avenue where it came to a stop half way into a driveway.
When the deputies walked up to the suspects’ car, they saw the front passenger, a male Black 34 years old, holding and pointing a gun at them. At the same time, the driver of the car started to back up, striking one of the deputies with the passenger’s side of the car. At that point, a deputy involved shooting occurred.
The driver of the car, a male Black, 32 years old, sped off northbound on Gundry Avenue and crashed into another vehicle. The front passenger exited the car and ran across Somerset Boulevard while the driver and the rear passenger, a Male Black, 24 years old, surrendered to deputies. A few minutes later, the third suspect, who originally ran from the car, also surrendered to deputies.
The driver of the suspect’s car sustained a gunshot wound to his lower leg. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injury and is expected to survive.
The deputy who was struck by the suspect’s car was treated at a local hospital and released.
The suspect’s gun has not been located.
The suspects were booked at Lakewood Sheriff’s Station for Assault on a Peace Officer.
