Dr. Angelica Zen, a resident physician at UCLA, says she didn’t have much obstetrics training but didn’t hesitate to help during the Air China flight from Taiwan to Los Angeles. Zen and her husband were on their way back from a honeymoon in Bali.

Zen tells Los Angeles news station KABC-TV that flight attendants acted as stand-in nurses, and most passengers were asleep until the cabin lights came on for the delivery.

‘My training is in internal medicine pediatrics so we do adults and kids but really no pregnant woman at all, so since my training we haven’t done much OBGYN,’ said Zen. ‘I was a little bit nervous.’

Zen had never delivered a baby by herself but she did what she had to do and helped the woman in labor. The mother of the child has not been identified and the sex of the baby has not been revealed.

Zen speaks mandarin and was able to communicate with the mother in her native language and to successfully deliver the baby in difficult circumstances.

‘I had very limited supplies with me and it was very difficult,” said Zen. “We had to work under very constrained circumstances.’

The captain headed to the nearest airport, in Anchorage, Alaska.
