Macedonia has now begun erecting a new razor-wire fence on its border with Greece in an attempt to make it harder for migrants to enter the country.

An army official released a statement saying: ‘The idea is to send a message to migrants that there is a double fence so give up crossing illegally,’

Over 86,000 migrants have entered the country in 2016, and police officials say they have stopped around 4,000 crossing illegally in January alone.

Macedonia has intermittently closed their border in attempt to slow migrants from crossing, they are now only allowing access for those wishing to travel to Austria or Germany.

The Macedonian Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki confirmed that his government had no intention to close the border permanently.

The new barrier will be at a distance of five meters from the opposite barrier that was erected in November.

Government officials did not comment on how long the new fence would remain, local media has reported that the fence would stretch for over 19 miles across the border.

Macedonia started reinforcing the border in November, after officials changed the entry criteria for approved refugees.
