INDEPENDENCE, MO. — On Saturday, October 24th, at approximately 5:52 pm, the Independence Police Department received a 911 call from a residence in the 1300 block of E. Mechanic Ave. regarding a deceased subject found at that location.
Officers arrived at the home and located a female subject deceased in the back yard of the residence. A person of interest was taken into custody at the scene. The victim was identified as Michelle R. Harrelson, 47 year old female, of Independence. Family members of the deceased have been notified.
Today, Shane M. Harrelson, 23 old male, of Independence was charged with Murder in the 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action in the death of his mother, Michelle R. Harrelson. Mr. Harrelson has been charged with knowingly causing the death of his mother by shooting, stabbing and striking her, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.
Harrelson used a gun, a baseball bat and a butcher knife in the horrific crime.
Police found the suspect in a detached garage working on a tattoo on his leg with the word “MOM.”
From Fox4KC: “Detectives say the Harrelson had difficulty with focus and staying on subject. They wrote in the official document that he would often ramble ‘with no purpose and the answers made no sense.’
Detectives say Harrelson told them he had ‘vivid’ memory of Saturday but would not elaborate. They say he showed no emotion when shown pictures of his mother’s bludgeoned body.”
