NEW YORK CITY — NYPD Transit Police Officer Daniel Mervis was on duty and in uniform standing on the south bound “A” train platform at Brooklyn’s Jay Street subway station Saturday morning when he was approached from behind by a man holding what appeared to be a barber style straight-edge razor.

The man stated “Officer, open your pockets.”

Officer Mervis turned around quickly and observed the suspect standing to the side of him on the platform, approximately 15 feet in front of him, with the weapon in his hand.

NYPD Officer Mervis then drew his service weapon and ordered the suspect to drop the weapon as the suspect continued to advance towards the officer.

Officer Mervis repeated his orders for the suspect to drop his weapon until the suspect came within approximately 3-5 feet from him and finally dropped the weapon to the ground.

Officer Mervis then ordered the suspect to turn around and place his hands behind his back before he placed the 24-year-old man from Brooklyn into custody without further incident.

Officer Daniel Mervis was appointed to the New York City Police Department on January 14, 2009. -NYPD
